From Idea to App Store: Building an AI-Powered Car Color Visualizer

Incredible Visibility designed, built, and shipped Velo Paint end-to-end for our client, a mobile app that lets car owners preview any paint color or finish on their own vehicle in seconds using generative AI. We delivered the complete product, including the app, the AI pipeline, authentication, payments, and the release infrastructure behind it.

Overview

Velo Paint is a consumer mobile app that answers a question every car owner has asked: what would my car look like in a different color? A user photographs their vehicle, picks a color and paint finish, glossy, matte, satin, or metallic, or describes what they want in plain language. The app then generates a photo-realistic repaint in seconds, preserving the original lighting, shadows, and reflections.

It serves car enthusiasts planning their next modification, and wrap and paint shops that want to show clients a preview before committing to a job. Incredible Visibility partnered with the client to build the entire product from the ground up, from first screen to App Store release.

The Challenge

Generative AI image editing is easy to demo and hard to productize. Every generation costs real money, so the app needed to prevent wasted spend, users uploading photos without cars, duplicate requests double-charging credits, or free users draining the API.

The editing had to feel effortless to someone who has never written an AI prompt, yet still satisfy power users who want precise control. And as a paid consumer app, it needed a monetization system that passes App Store review, handles refunds and restores, and keeps credit balances accurate in real time. Off-the-shelf app builders don't solve any of this. It required product thinking and careful backend design, not just screens around an API.

Our Approach

We treated AI generation as a metered financial transaction, not just an API call. Every generation flows through a server-side pipeline: the image is first validated by an AI car-detection check before any credit is spent, then processed by the generation model, and only charged on success, with request IDs passed through to make credit deduction idempotent.

All AI calls run in serverless edge functions, so API keys never ship inside the app binary. On the product side, we designed two editing modes: a guided flow with a color picker and paint-finish presets for mainstream users, and a free-form prompt mode for enthusiasts.

Credit balances sync over realtime subscriptions, so the UI is never stale. And because a consumer app lives or dies on iteration speed, we set up an over-the-air update pipeline with preview and production channels. Copy, UI, and paywall changes ship without waiting on App Store review.

What We Built

AI Repaint Engine

A server-side generation pipeline built on FLUX Kontext Pro via the Replicate API, wrapped in Supabase Edge Functions. Repaints preserve the vehicle's original highlights, shadows, and reflections, the difference between a toy and a tool a wrap shop can show a client.

Smart Car Detection

A GPT-4o-powered vision gate that confirms the photo actually contains a vehicle before any credit is spent. It protects users from wasted purchases and the business from wasted API spend.

Credits & Monetization

A credit ledger in Supabase with idempotent, request-scoped deduction, synced to the UI in realtime. RevenueCat powers two subscription tiers and three consumable credit packs, with free-trial and restore flows built in.

Guided & Custom Editing

A dual-mode editing experience: a color picker with paint-finish presets (gloss, matte, satin, metallic) for everyday users, and free-form prompt input for power users. Results support save, re-apply, rotate, and a full edit history.

Release & OTA Infrastructure

EAS build profiles and update channels for development, preview, and production. UI and product changes deploy over the air the same day, without waiting on a store review cycle.

The Impact

Velo Paint went from concept to a live, monetized product on the App Store, a complete consumer AI business, not a prototype.

  • Live on the App Store, iterated through multiple production releases
  • Photo-to-repaint flow completes in seconds, end to end
  • Five revenue SKUs live at launch: two subscription plans and three credit packs
  • Every generation validated by AI car detection before a credit is charged, with no wasted API spend
  • Idempotent credit metering, with no double-charges and balances always accurate in realtime
  • Same-day product iteration via OTA updates, with no store review required

Incredible Visibility handled every layer of the build, design, engineering, AI integration, monetization, and release operations.

Industry Relevance

Velo Paint is a blueprint for shipping consumer generative-AI products profitably. The hard problems it solves, metering expensive AI calls against a credit system, validating inputs before spending, monetizing through subscriptions and consumables, and iterating fast under App Store constraints, apply to any vertical building on generative AI, from photo and design tools to retail try-on experiences. For teams moving from AI demo to AI business, this engagement shows Incredible Visibility can deliver the full stack: model integration, unit economics, and product polish.
