Launching a Secure, Numberless Weighing Platform for Eating Disorder Recovery

Blind Weight provides an innovative solution for virtual care and eating disorder recovery through numberless weighing scales. The platform is designed for individuals recovering from eating disorders, allowing them to complete weigh-ins from the safety of their homes without seeing their actual weight.

Instead of numbers, the scale generates a code. We built the software ecosystem around this hardware, enabling users to efficiently log their codes while allowing authorized providers and parents to securely decode and monitor the data.

This approach removes the anxiety and triggers associated with traditional weigh-ins, empowering patients to focus on their recovery journey while clinicians receive the accurate data they need.

The core challenge was launching a completely new digital product ecosystem that could securely and accurately translate scale codes into actionable health data. Traditional off-the-shelf solutions couldn't handle the unique deterministic code algorithms required by the numberless scales or meet the strict HIPAA compliance needed for sharing sensitive patient data with providers.

The stakes were high: the system needed to be entirely trigger-free for patients while remaining clinically reliable for providers. We had to build a flawless decoding matrix, ensure strict role-based access controls for parents and clinicians, and create a seamless ordering portal to handle the distribution of scales to new clinics and patients.

Our approach focused on building a secure, multi-sided platform that prioritized emotional safety for the patient and clinical utility for the provider. We architected a robust Node.js backend to handle the complex decoding algorithms, ensuring that same weights consistently produced the same codes without expiration. We integrated strict role-based access controls and HIPAA-compliant data structures, ensuring patients never saw their decoded weights while authorized providers could easily access them.

To streamline operations, we developed distinct portals: an intuitive mobile app for patients to quickly scan or log codes, a comprehensive dashboard for providers to manage patients and decode entries, and a dedicated order portal to simplify scale distribution. Our engineering philosophy centered on removing friction, ensuring that the technology quietly supported the therapeutic relationship rather than complicating it.

The launch of the Blind Weight platform successfully established a secure, end-to-end ecosystem for numberless weigh-ins.
